About President Sheila Steinberg

Irvine Rotary’s new president, Dr. Sheila Lakshmi Steinberg, is Professor of Social and Environmental Sciences and Chair of the Faculty Personnel Committee and at Brandman University, Irvine, CA.  Sheila joined the Rotary Club of Irvine in 2013 after serving as a Rotary leader for 12 years in the Rotary Club of Arcata and Rotary Club of Orange.  At Irvine Rotary, Sheila has been instrumental in leading youth and vocational service programs, receiving the Outstanding Supporter of Prevention award from the Irvine Prevention Coalition for her work in support of teens in the community.

In addition to her Rotary leadership, Sheila was President of Arcata Economic Development Corporation (2009-2010) for which she also was a Board member from 2005 to 2011. Other Board roles include LatinoNet, Humboldt Couny, CA (2009-2010) and University Center Board of Directors, Humboldt State University (2010-2011).

Dr. Steinberg conducts research that focuses on space and place- and how research can benefit communities and the people who live there. Steinberg is committed to conducting applied research and encourages her students to use research to make a difference and to improve society through creating evidence-based policy based on sound research.

Dr. Steinberg is also a prolific author and researcher. Her research focuses on the relationship of people, space and place using a diversity of research methods. In 2015, she co-authored a book entitled GIS Research Methods: Incorporating Spatial Perspectives for Esri Press and has co-authored a book for Sage Publications entitled, GIS for the Social Sciences: Investigating Space and Place(2006). Steinberg co-edited Extreme Weather, Health and Communities: Interdisciplinary Engagement Strategies for Springer Press (2016).
